How Electric Vehicles (EV) Are Revolutionizing the Automotive Industry

Written by Patrick Gaughan

All-Electric vehicles also referred to as “EVs” have been a futuristic idea for the last few decades and beyond. Concepts that once seemed years away have quickly begun to arrive on all major highways all around the world. Most major automotive manufacturers have started introducing a plan to shift part of their lineup to EV models.

For the average person, the major change is obvious. No more fuelling up at the gas station. However, for the automotive industry, it means making a lot more changes.

Many brands have introduced new factory processes in order to build electric vehicles in the same locations as combustion engines are assembled. Others have built completely new factories to focus on battery manufacturing and EV production.

For service centers, new training for technicians is mandatory. Not only for maintenance on vehicles but for new safety protocols when handling high-voltage material. And now when it comes to an Electric Vehicle, a lot more can also be done using computers.

From a sales standpoint charging stations have been installed at most dealerships as these vehicles should not be left sitting with no charge for long periods of time. Pre-delivery inspections have also changed to ensure a full charge is held. Now Electric Vehicles, charging must be completed hours before delivery. Unlike a regular gas vehicle, that is filled up with gas quickly before a delivery.

Very similar to maintenance training, salespeople must be trained and updated on all new information on EVs. Clients often have lots of questions, as most have never owned an EV before. Different size vehicles have different charge times, ranges, and features. Warranties also must be updated to include large batteries.

Brands have taken different approaches to the EV market from midsize sedans to large trucks and capable SUVs. Some companies have even tested high-performance sports vehicles. Without the typical shifting of gears, an EV has a constant acceleration resulting in extremely quick pick up.

As gas prices increase, the biggest benefit to owning an EV is the savings on fuel. When adding in all the new models that are coming to market, the future of EVs is looking brighter than ever before. Unlike before, there are even more EVs to choose from, and even more upcoming models on the horizon.

You might find yourself shopping for one much sooner than you think.
