How to Make Your Tires Last Longer

Row of tires

A set of new tires can be quite an investment, which means you want them to last as long as possible before you have to replace them again. Is there a way to make your tires last longer? Fortunately, there are lots of things any Burlington driver can do to get a long life from their tires. Tires and tire maintenance are things that the service department at Mercedes-Benz Burlington knows well. So, we’ve put together the handy guide below how to make your tires last longer.

Things That Can Affect How Long the Life of Your Tires Last

There are lots of factors that can prevent you from getting a long life out of the tires on your car. In order to keep them operating on our Burlington roads, you should be aware of the following:

  • Driving habits – slow, careful driving is better for tires than taking corners fast and coming to stops abruptly.
  • Road conditions – paved roads are better for tires than gravel and dirt.
  • How they’re manufactured – some manufacturers warranty their tires for up to 128,000 kilometres, while others design their tires to last as little as 48,000 kilometres. That’s why we offer Mercedes-approved tires to our customers.

How to Make Your Tires Last Longer

We recommend that every Hamilton driver does the following in order to extend the lives of their tires:

  • Get the right tires for the right climate – All-season tires are not designed for the kind of severe winters we often get. Winter tires are essential when the weather starts to get cold.
  • Check your tire pressure regularly – In order to have a long life, tires need to be kept inflated to the right air pressure. Check the sticker on the inside of the driver door for the correct PSI.
  • Accelerate gently – “Peeling out” does exactly what it sounds like. Sudden acceleration can peel away tread from your tires, but accelerating gradually can go a long way towards saving your tires.
  • Allow plenty of time to brake – Skidding to a stop can cause undue wear on tires. Give yourself some time and come to a stop slowly.
  • Check the tire alignment twice a year – Misalignment, which can happen if you hit a large bump or curb, can keep your tires from having a long life. Tires that are misaligned wear unevenly.
  • Rotate your tires at regular intervals – Rotating your tires can mitigate uneven wear. Rotate tires for most cars every 9,600 to 12,800 kilometres, but 8,000 to 12,000 kilometres for AWD models.
  • Get your tires balanced – Uneven weight distribution can cause undue wear on your tires. Getting them balanced when they are installed or balanced can also go a long way toward saving your tires.
  • Check the tread wear rating on any tires you are about to buy – The higher the tread wear rating, the longer a tire should last. A tread wear rating of 500 is a mid-level rating of tread wear.
