Steps to Take When You Get a Flat

When you get a flat tire on Hamilton streets, you'll usually hear a grinding noise and a loss of traction. Don't hit the brakes. Instead, put on your hazards and coast to the shoulder of the road. Once you've slowed to a stop:

  • You'll want to put your spare tire on. In order to do this, you'll need a few tools, including: a lug wrench, jack, wheel wedges, gloves, and a flashlight.
  • Once you've gathered these tools, you'll need to position your wheel wedges, so your vehicle doesn't roll back while you're putting on your spare. If your flat is on a front tire, put the wedges behind the back tires. If your flat is on a back tire, put your wedged under the front tires.
  • Next up, place your jack under the wheel well frame of the flat tire, and crank it up, so that you raise this part of the car up about 6 inches.
  • Next, use your wrench to loosen up the lug nuts of the hubcap of the wheel with the flat tire, remove them and the hubcap, and then, carefully pull the tire off.
  • Then, insert the spare tire, put the lug nuts back on and fasten them until they're pretty tight, but slightly loose.
  • From there, lower the jack until your spare is level with the ground, and tighten the lug nuts the rest of the way until they are fully fastened.
  • You shouldn't drive more than 50 miles on the average spare tire, and don't exceed 50 MPH.
  • If you don't have a spare tire or the tools you need to perform this task, Mercedes-Benz Burlington can tow you to our garage.

What to Do When You Get a Flat Tire on a Run Flat Tire

If you have a Mercedes-Benz flat tire, the steps you need to take are quite different. This is because original Mercedes-Benz tires feature run-flat technology. This means that original Mercedes-Benz tires feature reinforced sidewalls that prevent your tire from losing all of its air in the event of a puncture. In the event of a flat, you won't need us to tow you, and you won't need to put on a spare. You'll be able to continue driving for another 80 km at low speeds, buying you enough time to drive to your nearest garage for help!
